Blowout + limited funds + trailer tire laying around = instant spare that's slightly better than a donut!

at the junkyard it may have been put there by someone poaching the rims, though usually not with all those lugs in place! Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Trailer wheels hold way more weight than that Jeep ever will, all while traveling the same roads at the same speeds and hitting the same potholes. Also, what makes you say it's a trailer wheel? It looks like one of these from American Racing:

Yep, with trailer wheels on all four corners. Interestingly, I only ever see it on Cherokees and Grand Cherokees.

People just scare me sometimes. I could see doing this in an emergency but not as a solution to needing a tire.

It's like those people who go 70-80 mph on a spare or use a spare like a tire replacement.

There's a red Mazda Speed 3 in my town that I've seen driving around on a donut for at least 4 days.

In the winter.
In Vermont.

That sucker is going to surprise him sometime soon.

I suppose that's possible, but it looks exactly like the ones at Wal-Mart for 30 bucks. Plus the tires are all kind of rounded at the top, which I've never seen on any normal ones.

Yep. I'd always make a point to check the spare when buying a used car. It really shouldn't have any more than 5 miles put on it each year, give or take. So if it's bald, you know the car wasn't properly cared for.

It might be, but I still really don't see the problem. Trailers hold a lot of weight.

Still, that's all they're meant to do: support weight and follow a car around. I doubt they're very good at putting down power and steering since they were never meant to do either of those things. There's a reason they're cheaper than regular tires, after all.

Could be that they guy wanted cheap ass wheels so he could drive/tow it to get scrapped.

Yeah, this when I'm glad that VW didn't cheap out with the sportwagen... they found a way to fit a full size spare below the cargo area in the hatch. I actually had to drive on the spare for about 2 weeks because of the stupid wheel locks... good thing it was a full size!

I think they're kindof cool. And they're cheap. Plus, trailer wheels have to be super strong, so I don't see why they wouldn't work.

Good idea. One downside to that for me was on my last car it developed a bulge during one of our really hot summers. Didn't discover it until I needed to use it and I thought my car was gonna shake apart.

They're designed to support weight, not to drive or steer.

But when you think about it, all those forces have to be applied to them when they're on the trailer, anyway. Alot of trailers even have brakes.

I've considered adding a 2-3" extension on to the bottom of my Civic's spare wheel well. It's got the clearance underneath to do it. As it is, I carry a full-sized spare in there anyway, but it causes the piece of wood inside to stick up a bit, so I lose a bit of trunk space.

If you have the means, then do it! You won't regret it at all... hell my car has enough room that I could fit an 18x8 wheel (or possibly larger, but you wouldn't want much larger wheels on the sportwagen) with a tire on it in the spare tire well. It is pretty deep as it is, but if I relocated the tool kit it could be the perfect hidden compartment!
